The HITECH Act and Rebates:

  • The HITECH act (part of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) authorizes Medicare and Medicaid to offer incentive payments to encourage doctors and hospitals to become "meaning users" of certified EHRs.
  • Incentive payments will only be paid to those who adopt a certified EHR and meet the government's "meaningful use" objectives.
  • Incentives begin in 2011 and will continue to be available through 2014, only in lesser amounts each year of the program.
  • Medicare payment penalties for not achieving meaningful use of a certified EHR begin in 2015.
