Prepare for HIPAA audit
HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was signed into law in 1996. Two provisions of HIPAA, The Privacy Rule & The Security Rule are of special significance to "Covered Enties", or Healthcare Providers.
HHS' Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has been enforcing the Privacy Rule and The Security Rule since 2005.
OCR enforces the Privacy and Security Rules in several ways:
- By investigating complaints filed with it,
- By conducting compliance audits to determine if covered entities are in compliance, and
- By performing education and outreach to foster compliance with the Rules' requirements.
The HITECH Act provided more funds to the OCR to increase monitoring and auditing activities. As a result, the number of Audits has significantly increased over the last year.
